Chandigarh: Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a time-bound investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into drug trafficking, gangsters and international arms networks allegedly operating in Punjab, Hindustan Times reported.
In his letter, Jakhar cited two cases: a convicted murderer who fled to Dubai while out on parole, and a police constable arrested with 25 kg of heroin. He alleged Pakistan-linked weapons and drug smuggling — this is Jakhar's allegation, not a finding by any investigating agency or court.
The letter follows Jakhar's 26 October statement, in which he demanded the release of the state's drug survey report and said he would write to the Centre seeking CBI and NIA action — that statement is already live on Awaaz Punjab. Jakhar had also written a separate, earlier letter on 17 October about an alleged drug trade operating from Punjab's prisons; this new letter is distinct from that one and centres on the drug-gangster-arms nexus.
No response from the Punjab government or the Home Ministry was included in the reports reviewed.
What happens next: whether the Home Ministry acts on the demand remains to be seen. Until then, this remains a political demand by an opposition leader — no NIA probe has been ordered.
