Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and from the Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday, November 2, becoming the third Punjab lawmaker to exit the ruling party in just two days, IANS reported. Singh, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, also submitted his resignation letter to the Punjab Assembly Speaker.

Sharing the news on social media platform X, Singh said he would remain 'indebted to you until my last breath for the love and respect you have shown me', addressing the people of Punjab, Nation Press reported. He said his sole purpose is 'Punjab First' and pledged to work toward clean politics and transparent administration. Singh claimed he had achieved 90 per cent of the targets he had set as an MLA — a claim made in his own statement — and listed constituency work from water and sewage issues to the Bargari sacrilege case among the matters he raised.

A resignation that follows two others a day earlier

Singh's exit is a new development on top of a story Awaaz Punjab reported on November 1: Sanour MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra, a former minister, resigned from AAP's primary membership and from the Assembly on Sunday. The three resignations together mark a visible escalation in the internal crisis in Punjab's ruling party ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

The break did not happen overnight. AAP had suspended Singh for five years in June 2025 over what the party described as anti-party activities, after he opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, IANS reported. On Sunday, the day before his resignation, Singh had openly attacked AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asserting — in his own criticism — that the party had strayed from its founding ideals.

Why it matters for 2027

AAP holds a commanding majority in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, so three resignations do not threaten the government numerically. Politically, however, a resignation wave by sitting MLAs — including a former police chief who built his image on the sacrilege investigation — hands the Congress, BJP and SAD a ready attack line months before the 2027 campaign, and each vacant seat raises the prospect of a by-election test.

What happens next rests first with the Assembly Speaker: Punjab Outlook noted that the formal acceptance of Singh's resignation remains to be confirmed, and its report was based on Singh's public statement. No immediate AAP response to Singh's resignation was carried in the initial reports. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when the Speaker's office or the party confirms the next step.
