Three Punjab legislators who broke away from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Monday, November 2, the news agencies ANI and IANS reported — completing a move Awaaz Punjab reported earlier in the day as still pending, when Sanaur MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra had reached the BJP headquarters for the joining event and Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh's next party was explicitly unconfirmed.

BJP Punjab in-charge Satish Poonia welcomed Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Jouramajra and Pathanmajra into the party, with Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and several senior state leaders present, The Punjab Standard reported. Taking a dig at AAP's election symbol, Dhillon said, as his party's characterisation: "Good leaders are leaving the Aam Aadmi Party. The broom has now scattered." He said AAP had wasted five years of Punjab — the BJP's claim, reported as its position.

Kunwar attacks the Mann government at his joining

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a former IPS officer, launched a sharp attack on the Bhagwant Mann government at the joining, The Punjab Standard reported. "Drugs are at their peak in Punjab. Extortion has become an industry and gangsterism is at its peak," he said, adding — as his allegation — that gangsters were being made part of the Punjab government. He said unemployment was at its highest and industry had collapsed, and that he joined the BJP after seeing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's attachment to the people of Punjab. These are the departing leader's claims and criticism, reported as his stated reasons, not established findings.

AAP dismissed the exits. Senior party leader Baltej Pannu said Jouramajra and Pathanmajra had already been sidelined by the party, while Kunwar had been suspended long ago, so their move makes little difference to AAP, The Punjab Standard reported — the ruling party's response, reported as its position.

How the three exits unfolded

Pathanmajra and Jouramajra resigned from AAP's primary membership on Sunday, November 1, a day after AAP released its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, in which neither name appeared. AAP suspended both on Sunday morning for alleged anti-party activities and said it would ask Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan to cancel their legislative membership. Kunwar separately resigned his Assembly seat; AAP had suspended him for five years in June 2025 after he opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, IANS reported.

The Speaker will now decide on all three matters before him: Kunwar's Assembly resignation and AAP's plea to disqualify Jouramajra and Pathanmajra, The Punjab Standard reported. Kunwar won Amritsar North in 2022 by over 28,000 votes, and Jouramajra is a former minister in the Mann government — the three are the BJP's highest-profile Punjab inductions so far in the run-up to the February 2027 Assembly elections, which the BJP is contesting on its own.

What is solid

  • All three leaders — Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra — formally joined the BJP in New Delhi on Monday, November 2 (ANI; IANS; The Punjab Standard).
  • BJP Punjab in-charge Satish Poonia welcomed the three, with Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon present (The Punjab Standard).
  • Pathanmajra and Jouramajra resigned from AAP on Sunday, November 1, after being left out of AAP's first list of 40 candidates for 2027; AAP suspended them for alleged anti-party activities and said it would seek their disqualification (ANI; IANS).

What is only claimed

  • Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh's charges against the Mann government (drugs, extortion, gangsterism, industry) and Dhillon's charge that AAP wasted five years are the BJP side's claims; AAP's Baltej Pannu countered that the three had already been sidelined or suspended and their exit makes little difference — each side's position is reported as its claim, not as an established finding.
