Chandigarh, October 22: The Punjab Government has completed construction of 957 out of 1,000 planned modern Anganwadi centres across the state, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said on Thursday, adding that work on the remaining centres is progressing at a fast pace.

The centres are being built under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme through convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Dr Kaur said the government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore for the project — yaani Rs 1 billion set aside to rebuild the state's child-care infrastructure at the grassroots level.
According to the minister, the new centres will work as combined hubs for pre-school education, supplementary nutrition, health check-ups and growth monitoring for young children, and will also provide improved support services for pregnant women and lactating mothers.
The figure marks a step up from the government's earlier update in July 2026, when 892 modern centres had been reported complete. Punjab Chronicle, reporting the project's background, said about Rs 10 lakh was earmarked per centre in the original plan, covering construction and essential facilities including flooring, painting, plumbing, electrical work and woodwork.

Dr Kaur said the initiative, under the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government, is aimed at giving every child a safe and nurturing environment along with better nutrition and early childhood education facilities.
