Sonu Swarnkar (Soni), 35, and Nishu Soni, 38, were returning home on a scooter after closing their showroom, S R Jewellers, when three or four men attacked them around 8 pm, about 700 metres from their home in Radha Govind Vihar, police said. The attackers opened fire, knocking the brothers off their scooter, and then tried to snatch a bag containing jewellery. When the brothers resisted, the assailants beat them with iron rods and sticks. The family alleged that the attackers escaped with two small jewellery boxes and a gold chain.

Their cries for help drew Seema Gupta, 32, who lives opposite the spot. She ran towards the attackers carrying stones, but they allegedly shot her in the leg before fleeing as people began gathering. All three injured people were taken to SMS Hospital. CCTV footage of the attack has also emerged, and Jamdoli police are investigating.

Nishu Soni told police the assault began on a poorly lit stretch about 250 metres from the showroom, that three or four men carrying iron rods suddenly approached, and that the beating continued for nearly three minutes, with one attacker firing a second shot at him, the Times of India reported.

Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot cited the Jamdoli attack while criticising law and order in Jaipur, claiming five miscreants had attacked the two jeweller brothers and looted Rs 20 lakh and that the woman was fired at when she tried to chase the attackers, Nation Press reported. The attackers' number and the value looted in Gehlot's claim differ from the family's account reported by the Times of India; police have not yet announced any arrest in the case.
