Sangrur: Sangrur Police on Saturday said they had arrested a Longowal man and recovered about 16 kg of opium from him in an operation carried out under the Punjab government's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Ravjot Grewal announced the arrest at a press briefing, where the seized contraband — a large sack — was displayed before the media.

Police identified the arrested man as Sarabjit Singh alias Sarba, a resident of Longowal town in Sangrur district, and said the roughly 16 kg of opium recovered from him amounts to a commercial quantity under the NDPS Act. Police said four FIRs have already been registered against the accused in earlier cases.

According to the police, investigators are now tracing the backward and forward linkages of the alleged supply chain — where the consignment came from and where it was meant to be delivered. The recovery and the accused's alleged role are police claims based on their investigation; they have not been tested in court, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The arrest is the latest district-level action in the state-wide anti-drug drive, under which Punjab Police announce recoveries and arrests across districts almost every day. Police said further investigation in the Sangrur case is under way.
