The firing took place on Wednesday, October 28, near the Mehandipur crossing in the Khemkaran area of Tarn Taran district, close to the India-Pakistan border. Senior Superintendent of Police Surinder Lamba said three occupants of a car were injured: Gursewak Singh of Asal village died during treatment, while Sajan Singh and Harkirat Singh were admitted to a private hospital in Bhikhiwind in critical condition, The Tribune reported.

Police identified the alleged shooter as Manjit Singh Katta, a commission agent and transporter from Khemkaran, and said a case was also registered naming his brother Sandeep Singh, according to PTI reporting carried by LatestLY. On Wednesday the accused was absconding and special police teams had been formed to arrest him, the SSP said.

Katta's reported claim — that he mistook the car's occupants for shooters sent by gangsters after receiving threats, as he returned with his wife from the Ghariyala temple — is the accused's version, the SSP said on Wednesday, adding that prima facie it appeared to be a case of personal enmity and that CCTV footage was being examined. None of the alleged motives has been established; police said the facts would emerge during the investigation, including the source of the weapon used.
