The Vepery police in Chennai have registered a case against former DMK minister P.K. Sekarbabu and the party's Lok Sabha member Dr Kalanidhi Veeraswamy for allegedly obstructing police personnel during protests triggered by the arrest of former school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, according to IANS reporting on Wednesday, October 28.

The case followed a confrontation outside the Chennai Police Commissioner's office, where Anbil Mahesh was reportedly taken after his arrest. The charges include unlawful assembly and preventing public servants from discharging their official duties, police said.
DMK functionaries protested at several locations across Chennai as the former minister was taken for a medical examination and court proceedings, gathering outside the Commissioner's office, at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and near the court premises. Some party members were reported to have attempted to block police vehicles transporting Mahesh.

According to the reports, Sekarbabu and other DMK members assembled outside the Commissioner's office after learning that Mahesh had been brought there, and an argument broke out with police personnel stationed at the location. Sekarbabu allegedly challenged the police over their conduct, asking, as reported, whether they were acting as mediators. Veeraswamy also reportedly joined the confrontation along with other party functionaries.
Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, a senior DMK leader, was arrested on October 26 by the Greater Chennai Police's Central Crime Branch after the Madras High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea in an alleged private-school approvals scam. He has denied the allegations, and a special court remanded him to judicial custody until November 6. The allegations against all concerned remain under investigation and are yet to be established in court.
