Madras State was created on November 1, 1956, as part of the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines. It was renamed Tamil Nadu on July 18, 1967, after a resolution was passed in the state assembly under then Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.
No design, timeline or formal proposal for a state flag has been announced yet. The minister's statement puts the idea formally on the government's agenda, with the next steps — including the November 1 public-holiday proposal — resting with the Chief Minister.
