A special police team apprehended Saravanan at the residence of ACK Premkumar, deputy organiser of the DMK's Central District Youth Wing in Villupuram. Premkumar was also arrested for allegedly sheltering the councillor while police were searching for him, according to the report.

The arrests followed the circulation of a video purportedly showing Saravanan making the comments outside Puzhal Central Prison, where DMK supporters had gathered as former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was brought in after his arrest in a case involving bribery allegations. Saravanan allegedly said, in remarks directed at the Chief Minister and referring to Karur: "If only we had finished him off back in Karur, would things have reached this state?" The remark is an allegation recorded in the police case and reported by IANS; it has not been tested in court.

Puzhal police registered a case against Saravanan under four sections, including provisions relating to obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, intimidation and disturbing public peace. Three special teams were formed to locate him after he allegedly went into hiding, and police said he attempted to mislead them by claiming he was travelling to Bengaluru before being traced to Premkumar's residence in Villupuram.

Nation Press also listed the arrest among its Tamil Nadu politics reports on Wednesday. No response from Saravanan or Premkumar to the allegations was reported in the coverage, and the investigation is continuing.
