Police identified the accused as Devraj, 28, son of Shyam Singh, a resident of Bakaniya village under the Faridpur police station area. He is alleged to have snatched the earring; the allegations have not been tested in court.

The case began on October 30, when Sunil, a resident of Kamalpur Palpur village in the Cantt police station area, was travelling by motorcycle with his wife Ishu to her parents' home in Mohalla Kanoon Goyan, in the Faridpur area. At around 5 pm, near Dashmesh Dhaba, an unidentified motorcycle-borne man allegedly grabbed an earring from Ishu's ear and sped away, according to the complaint.

Sunil lodged a complaint on November 1, and an FIR numbered 833/2026 was registered against an unknown accused at Faridpur police station under Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers snatching. A dedicated team was formed to investigate.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the area and used the 'Find Criminals - Find by Face' facility on the Yaksha App to narrow down suspects, which pointed to Devraj, police said. When the team moved to arrest him on Monday, he allegedly opened fire at the police and was injured in retaliatory fire before being taken into custody, according to the police account.

Police said they recovered an illegal .32-bore pistol, two live cartridges and one spent cartridge, the motorcycle allegedly used in the snatching, registered as UP25ED6693, and the stolen yellow-metal earring from the accused. Officers said the recovered earring matched the property cited in FIR 833/2026, and that the accused admitted to the October 30 snatching during questioning - a claim made by police that remains an allegation at this stage.
