Three young men died after coming into contact with a high-tension power line during a Durga idol immersion procession in Gorakhpur district on Wednesday evening, October 21, according to local reports from the Gulriha police station area. The incident took place at Rajahi Chauraha in Jungle Ayodhya Prasad, where devotees were travelling by tractor-trolley to immerse the idol.

A long iron rod fitted on the trolley touched the 11,000-volt overhead line passing above the road, sending current through the vehicle and into the people riding on it, Nirvan Times reported. Purvanchal Report likewise said the idol or material linked to it came into contact with the high-tension wire during the immersion procession. Three youths died in the incident; two of the dead were brothers, according to Nirvan Times.

Several others suffered burn injuries and were admitted to BRD Medical College for treatment, where MLA Mahendra Pal Singh of the Pipraich constituency visited the injured, enquired about their treatment and assured the families of all possible support, Nirvan Times reported.

Families protest at the medical college; DM and SSP reach the spot

Angry family members and local residents later sat on the road near the gate of BRD Medical College with the bodies and staged a strong protest, Dynamite News reported. District Magistrate Deepak Meena, SSP Dr Kaustubh and MLA Mahendra Pal Singh reached the scene with a heavy police force as officials worked to control the situation, the report said.

Villagers and the organising committee have alleged that the electricity supply on the procession route, which they say had been shut for the procession, was suddenly restored as the trolley reached Rajahi Chauraha — an allegation reported by local video coverage that officials have not publicly confirmed. Police and district administration teams reached the spot after the incident and gathered details, Purvanchal Report said.

What is solid

  • Three people died after a Durga immersion tractor-trolley came into contact with an 11,000-volt high-tension line at Rajahi Chauraha, Jungle Ayodhya Prasad, in Gorakhpur's Gulriha area on Wednesday evening (Purvanchal Report; Nirvan Times; Dynamite News).
  • The injured were taken to BRD Medical College, and MLA Mahendra Pal Singh visited them there (Nirvan Times).
  • Family members protested with the bodies near the BRD Medical College gate, and DM Deepak Meena and SSP Dr Kaustubh reached the spot with police (Dynamite News).

What is only claimed

  • The number of injured differs across reports — five seriously injured (Purvanchal Report), seven burnt (Nirvan Times), and ten injured in one headline summary — so the exact injury count is not yet settled.
  • The allegation that power supply on the route was restored mid-procession despite a shutdown is made by villagers and organisers in local coverage; it has not been confirmed by the electricity department or the district administration.

What caused the rod to reach the line, and whether the supply-restoration allegation holds, will turn on the district administration's inquiry — for the families at BRD Medical College on Wednesday night, those answers were still awaited.
