Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday, November 1, assured farmers that losses caused by untimely rains, excessive rainfall and hailstorms linked to the cyclone would be compensated, saying he considers the compensation given earlier to be inadequate. The assurance was issued through the Chief Minister's Office, Nation Press reported.

In the statement carried on the official channel of the Chief Minister's Office, Adityanath said the double-engine government would compensate the state's annadata (food-provider) farmers for their losses and that a new package would also be brought for them, through which compensation for crop damage would be ensured.

Every district administration in the state has been directed to conduct an immediate survey of crop losses and to disburse compensation to affected farmers without delay, according to the Chief Minister's Office statement reported by Nation Press.

The announcement marks a step beyond the state government's earlier response to the same weather spell, when district administrations were asked to assess damage and begin compensation; the Chief Minister has now publicly said that the earlier compensation was not enough and that a dedicated new package will follow.

District-level surveys are the first formal step under the State Disaster Response Fund mechanism, through which state and central relief is released. The details of the new package — including compensation amounts, eligibility and timelines — have not yet been announced.

Uttar Pradesh is one of India's largest agricultural producers, and unseasonal rain and hailstorms outside the regular monsoon window can damage standing crops at a stage when farmers have little buffer. Farmers will now wait for the district surveys to be completed and for the package details to be notified.
