The deceased was identified as Kusum Chaturvedi. She was found on the staircase of her house by a woman who regularly visited the home for domestic work and who raised the alarm with neighbours. What police have — and have not — confirmed
City Kotwali police inspected the premises and opened an investigation. Although murder is suspected, police have not yet confirmed the cause of death, and investigators say the circumstances will become clearer as the probe progresses.

Local residents have claimed that Chaturvedi's earrings and gold bangles were missing, prompting suspicion of robbery. That claim, and any connection between missing jewellery and the death, has not been officially confirmed. Police are questioning nearby residents and are examining robbery, personal enmity and other possible motives without ruling out any line of inquiry.

Chaturvedi had four daughters and a son, Anoop, who works in Agra and visited her occasionally, according to the local report. The death has caused concern among residents of the densely populated locality.
