Counting for Uttar Pradesh's 11 Legislative Council (MLC) seats neared completion on Wednesday, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) standing at six seats — five declared and one in which its candidate was leading — and the Samajwadi Party (SP) at five, with three declared wins and leads in two seats, according to the tally reported by ANI as results came in.

Polling for the 11 seats — five graduates' constituencies and six teachers' constituencies — was held on October 23, with 152 candidates in the fray and about 14.81 lakh electors eligible to vote, IANS reported. The council contest has been widely viewed as a political semi-final ahead of the state assembly elections.

Agra returned a split verdict. Seats decided earlier in the count

The BJP had earlier won both Meerut seats — Dinesh Kumar Goyal took the Meerut-Saharanpur graduates' constituency by 12,855 votes over the SP's Pramod Singh Bhati, and Shri Chand Sharma won the Meerut teachers' seat by 13,241 votes over Nitin Tomar — and also took the Bareilly-Moradabad teachers' seat through Hari Singh Dhillon. The SP's declared wins before Wednesday's results included the Varanasi teachers' constituency, retained by Lal Bihari Yadav.

Counting still on in three seats

In the Lucknow graduates' constituency, the SP's Kanti Singh was ahead of the BJP's Avnish Singh by 7,600 votes after the fourth round of counting, and in Varanasi graduates', the SP's Ashutosh Sinha was leading the BJP's Kedarnath, Jagran's live coverage reported. In the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers' constituency, the BJP's Dhruv Kumar Tripathi was leading; SP and independent candidates boycotted that count alleging problems with the process — an allegation, not an established finding, in the reports.

Reacting to the results, SP president Akhilesh Yadav congratulated party workers and the victorious candidates in a post on X and urged them to celebrate peacefully without processions, saying BJP supporters should get no chance to level accusations of rioting. "Heartiest congratulations to you and your colleagues on this victory," he wrote, adding that the party would felicitate the winners.

Formal declarations by returning officers were still awaited for the seats where candidates were only leading when these reports were filed. Because council elections use preferential voting on paper ballots, later rounds can change early trends, so the 6-5 tally remains provisional until every declaration is made.
