According to the Dadri police, Harendra Nagar allegedly planned the incident with the help of relatives and other accomplices in order to implicate his neighbour, Vikas Sain, following a previous dispute between them. Police said the shooting was staged in front of a CCTV camera at Nagar's home, after which a false complaint naming Sain was lodged at the Dadri police station.

The alleged plot began to unravel when officers examined the CCTV footage and the camera's recording device. Police said the evidence they gathered linked the suspects to the staging of the incident rather than to any genuine attack.

Three men have been arrested in the case. Police identified them as Pratik alias Kalua, 26, of Kurikheda village; Atul Bhati, 29, of Sakipur; and Abhishek Nagar, 25, of Nyadar Ganj. According to the police account reported on Monday, Kalua is Nagar's nephew, Bhati is his brother-in-law and Abhishek Nagar is his son.
