Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhay Kumar Mishra told Jagran that the deceased was identified as Maya Tyagi, alias Aman Tyagi, a resident of Muzaffarnagar. Mishra said Tyagi had been absconding for a long time, which led police to announce the Rs 50,000 reward while teams searched for him.

According to police, Tyagi was a registered criminal at Badalpur police station with more than 12 criminal cases filed against him, and was actively associated with the Randeep Bhati and Anil Dujana gangs. Hindustan Times reported that the police action came after Tyagi was booked in an attempt-to-murder case. The gang links and case history are police accounts and have not been tested in court.
