The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Uttar Pradesh, has acted after errors surfaced in the electoral roll of Assembly Constituency 127-Pilibhit, where searching by certain EPIC numbers online displayed the details of completely different voters, according to a press note issued by the CEO's office and reported by IANS.

The District Election Officer of Pilibhit conducted an inquiry on Wednesday and confirmed the problem for some electors. The CEO's office has ordered immediate correction of the discrepancies and directed that the Electoral Registration Officer and the Voter Registration Centre operator of the constituency be removed at once from all electoral roll-related duties.

Legal proceedings will be initiated against them under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the press note said. A report on the accountability of the constituency's Assistant Electoral Registration Officers has also been sought. The District Election Officer has been told to examine the rolls of every assembly constituency in Pilibhit district and report within two days, and all District Election Officers across Uttar Pradesh have been told to carry out a similar check and report within the same deadline.

Separately, Congress leaders alleged at a press conference in Lucknow that more than 16,000 changes had been made in the Pilibhit Sadar voter list, an allegation the party said it would pursue legally. Those figures are the party's allegations and have not been presented by the election office as its findings; the CEO's confirmed action, as reported, concerns the EPIC mismatches found in the inquiry and the corrective and disciplinary steps ordered in response.
