The snow is expected in two waves: lighter snow on Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, then heavier snow returning on Monday morning and continuing into the evening with an additional four to eight inches, forecasters said. A separate winter storm warning covers the Upper Koyukuk Valley, including Allakaket, Alatna, Evansville and Bettles, with up to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts as high as 30 mph, the weather service said. Further west, the Western Brooks Range including Red Dog Mine was forecast 10 to 20 inches with gusts up to 55 mph, according to a summary of the National Weather Service warnings.

The National Weather Service warned that travel in the region will be difficult and advised anyone who must travel to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. The Dalton Highway is the gravel haul road that carries trucks and supplies north to Alaska's North Slope oilfields, so a two-wave storm of this size is a direct concern for freight drivers working the route in extreme cold and darkness.
