Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol troopers arrested a commercial vehicle driver for impaired driving after a car hauler rolled over on Interstate 40 east of Flagstaff during the early morning hours of October 18, 2026, CDLLife reported, citing AZDPS.

Troopers reported multiple signs of impairment when they contacted the driver, and a field sobriety test had to be stopped when he was unable to follow instructions, according to AZDPS. A breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.168 — more than twice the legal limit for most drivers and well above the stricter limit for commercial drivers, American Truck Drivers reported.

The driver told troopers this was the second time he had crashed a commercial vehicle while intoxicated, AZDPS said. Despite clear, dry weather, he claimed the truck had “slipped,” leading to the rollover, according to both reports.

Officials said the crash caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to 12 separate victims. All nine vehicles being hauled were damaged, along with more than 200 feet of Arizona Department of Transportation guardrail. The driver was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility on DUI charges, with felony criminal damage charges also submitted, American Truck Drivers reported.

AZDPS used the case to warn commercial drivers: “Driving impaired is never worth the risk. Commercial drivers are responsible for thousands of pounds of equipment, valuable cargo, and the lives of everyone sharing the roadway.” The department urged drivers who have been drinking to plan ahead, use a designated driver, call a ride, or stay where they are.
