PHOENIX, Arizona — Five people were taken to hospital, four of them in critical condition, after a Jeep crashed into a bus stop in south Phoenix on Wednesday morning, October 28, in a collision that Phoenix police say began when the Jeep hit another car pulling out of an apartment complex.

The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. near the junction of 46th Street and Baseline Road, a busy east-west corridor in south Phoenix, as people were waiting at the bus stop during the morning commute. Phoenix officers and firefighters were called to the scene, where they found a Jeep Patriot that had left the road and slammed into the stop.

How the crash happened, according to police

Phoenix police told 12News that a white Jeep was travelling westbound on Baseline Road when it collided with a Buick that was pulling out of a nearby apartment complex. The impact sent the Jeep over the curb and into the bus stop, where four women — three adults and one juvenile — were waiting. Police said speed was a factor in the crash. Impairment is not currently suspected, officers said, but both drivers will be tested as part of the investigation.

The Phoenix Fire Department said six patients were evaluated in total. Two people were taken to a pediatric trauma centre in critical condition and two adults were taken to a trauma centre, also in critical condition, the department said. Another adult was transported in stable condition, and a sixth person declined to go to hospital. One person was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by firefighters, according to the fire department's account reported by 12News.

Minor-safety note

Two of the critically injured patients were taken to a pediatric trauma centre. Consistent with this newsroom's minor-safety rule, this report does not name or describe any injured minor beyond age group and city — no names have been released by authorities in any case.

Why this junction matters

Baseline Road is one of south Phoenix's main east-west arterials, carrying commuters, school traffic and delivery and freight vehicles between residential neighbourhoods, apartment complexes and the city's southern job centres. Bus stops along such corridors sit directly beside fast-moving traffic, often with only a curb between waiting passengers and the road — which is why a single loss of control at speed can turn a routine morning wait into a mass-casualty scene, as happened here.

Wednesday's crash also underlines the two findings police have already put on record: speed, which officers confirmed was a factor, and the chain-reaction path of the collision — a side impact with the Buick first, then the curb, then the stop. Investigators have not said how fast the Jeep was travelling, whether any driver will face charges, or what the Buick's driver told officers.

Impact on local residents — and on diaspora and trucker readers

For families across south Phoenix who rely on buses along Baseline Road for work and school, the crash is a direct hit on a daily routine: the stop serves apartment complexes whose residents include many immigrant and working-class households. Punjabi and other South Asian families living in the Phoenix metro — and Punjabi truck drivers who run Baseline and other south Phoenix arterials on local deliveries — will recognise the pattern: wide, fast roads, stops close to traffic, and pedestrians with nowhere to step back.

What happens next

Phoenix police say the investigation is continuing. Both drivers are to be tested, as officers said, and detectives will use the speed finding, vehicle damage and witness accounts to decide whether charges or citations follow. Hospitals had not released updated conditions for the four critical patients by Wednesday evening, and police had not released the names of any of the adults involved. This report will be updated when authorities release those details.
