PHOENIX, Arizona — Drivers crossing the Phoenix valley this Halloween weekend will run into one of the season's busiest freeway work packages. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close segments of several major Phoenix freeways beginning Friday night, October 30, for bridge and infrastructure construction, according to ADOT's weekend advisory as reported by AZFamily.

The closures affect State Route 51, Loop 202, Loop 101, Loop 303 and the Interstate 10 frontage road. They begin at staggered times starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 30, and most major restrictions last until 5 a.m. on Monday, November 2. ADOT's advisories note that schedules can change with weather, and the department directs drivers to real-time conditions on AZ511.gov, the AZ511 app or by calling 511 before setting out.
The pieces come off at different times. The Loop 303 project concludes first, at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. The Loop 101 restrictions end at noon on Sunday, November 1. The remaining restrictions — on SR 51, Loop 202 and the I-10 frontage road — run through to 5 a.m. on Monday, November 2, in time for the Monday morning commute.
The I-10 frontage road closure that runs much longer
Separate from the weekend package, a longer closure is already in force on the West Valley freight corridor. According to ADOT's Loop 101 and I-10 system interchange project page, the westbound I-10 frontage road at the Loop 101 interchange is fully closed from 5 a.m. Monday, October 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, November 9, with McDowell Road suggested as the westbound alternate. After that, the frontage road narrows to one lane between 91st and 99th avenues from November 9 to November 19, and again from November 30 to December 7.

On the freeway itself, eastbound I-10 between 99th and 75th avenues carries an 11-foot lane-width restriction and a reduced 55 mph speed limit through December 31. Thomas Road at Loop 101 is narrowed to one lane in each direction on weeknights, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday, though left turns are still allowed. The interchange project adds a direct HOV ramp, widens Loop 101 and I-10, builds a new slip-ramp connection to 91st Avenue and extends the southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at McDowell Road. ADOT says construction began in mid-May 2026 and is expected to take about three years.
South of the Valley: the I-10 Wild Horse Pass corridor toward Tucson
For drivers running the Phoenix–Tucson corridor, ADOT announced on October 5 that active construction had begun on the third of four segments of the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor — an 11-mile stretch between Loop 202 and the Gila River. Crews will add a third general-purpose lane in both directions and an HOV lane from Loop 202 to Riggs Road, rebuild the Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road and Queen Creek Road/SR 347 interchanges, and build a new interchange at Koli Road. All four segments of the 26-mile corridor are expected to be finished by late 2029, and overnight one-lane stretches south of Loop 202 can slow night runs in the meantime.
ADOT posts real-time highway conditions at AZ511.gov and on the AZ511 app, or by dialling 511. The weekend closure times in this report are the staggered windows ADOT published for October 30 to November 2; ramp closures can begin earlier than the mainline times, so dispatchers should check each departure.
One corridor with good news: US 60 stays open east of the Valley
Not every route is restricted. ADOT advised that U.S. Highway 60 between Superior and Miami, from mileposts 227 to 243, has no scheduled lane restrictions or closures for its bridge replacement project from October 26 to 30, and no closures are currently planned through mid-November, the Gila Herald reported on October 26. A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction and reduced speed limits remain in place for the duration of that project.

Why this matters for truckers and Punjabi drivers in the Valley
Interstate 10 is the freight spine linking Phoenix with Tucson and with California, and the Loop 101/I-10 interchange serves the West Valley's warehouse districts, where many Punjabi truck drivers and warehouse workers in the Phoenix area earn their living. A full frontage-road closure until November 9 affects local pickups and deliveries even on days when the mainline freeway is open, and the 11-foot lane restriction on eastbound I-10 is a real constraint for wide loads. Weekend night dispatch — already heavy ahead of Halloween on Saturday — should build in the McDowell Road alternate and expect frontage-road congestion near the interchange.
What happens next
The weekend closures lift in stages through Monday at 5 a.m. The I-10 frontage road then moves into its one-lane phases in November, and ADOT's weekend advisories will continue through the construction season. Drivers who cross the Valley regularly should treat AZ511 as part of the pre-trip check until the interchange and Wild Horse Pass projects are complete.
