Phoenix drivers and truckers face a full weekend of freeway work: the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has scheduled closures on five freeways and ramps across the Phoenix area from Friday night, October 30, through Monday morning, November 2, for pavement-improvement and bridge projects. All five closures were in effect on Saturday, and they reopen in stages — the first on Saturday afternoon, the last at 5 a.m. on Monday.

Loop 101 westbound (Agua Fria Freeway): I-17 to 51st Avenue
Westbound Loop 101 is closed between Interstate 17 and 51st Avenue for a pavement-improvement project, from 8 p.m. Friday to noon on Sunday, November 1. The northbound and southbound I-17 ramps to westbound Loop 101 are also closed, as are the westbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue. ADOT's detour: I-17 drivers may use westbound Deer Valley Road or Union Hills Drive to reach Loop 101 westbound at 51st or 59th avenues; Loop 101 drivers may use 19th Avenue southbound to Union Hills Drive westbound to reconnect beyond the closure.

SR 51 southbound: Cactus Road to Northern Avenue
Southbound State Route 51 is closed between Cactus Road and Northern Avenue for a pavement-improvement project, from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, November 2. The SR 51 southbound on-ramps from Bell Road to 26th Street are closed as well. ADOT suggests using southbound Seventh Street from Cactus Road to Northern Avenue as the detour.

Loop 202 eastbound: McQueen Road to Cooper Road
Eastbound Loop 202 is closed between McQueen Road and Cooper Road from 10 p.m. Friday, October 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, November 2. The eastbound on-ramps at Dobson Road, Alma School Road and Arizona Avenue are also closed. ADOT's detour sends drivers along Pecos Road or Germann Road to connect with eastbound Loop 202 at Cooper Road or Gilbert Road.

Loop 303 eastbound and the I-10 frontage road
Eastbound Loop 303 is closed between 43rd Avenue and I-17 for a bridge project, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 31 — the earliest of the weekend reopenings. The signed detour uses northbound 43rd Avenue to eastbound Dove Valley Road to connect with southbound I-17. Separately, the westbound I-10 frontage road is closed between 91st and 99th avenues for an improvement project from Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, November 2, with westbound McDowell Road as the detour.

ADOT posts real-time highway conditions on its Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, on the AZ511 app, and by phone at 511. Weekend schedules can change — check the live status of your exact route before leaving, especially for the Monday 5 a.m. reopenings.
Why this weekend, and who it hits hardest
ADOT bundles big pavement and bridge jobs into weekend windows so crews can close whole carriageways instead of dragging lane restrictions through weekday rush hours — the Loop 101 and SR 51 jobs are both pavement improvement, the Loop 303 job is bridge work, and the I-10 frontage and Loop 202 closures are listed as improvement projects in the same advisory. The timing lands on one of the busiest travel weekends of the autumn in Phoenix: Halloween weekend, with the Arizona State Fair at the state fairgrounds on West McDowell Road running its final days through Sunday, November 1, according to community event listings.

For freight, the pinch points are the belt routes. Loop 101, Loop 202 and Loop 303 are the ring freeways long-haul and regional trucks use to cross or bypass the Phoenix metro area and to connect with I-10 and I-17, and I-10 itself is the main east–west freight corridor through the city. A closed westbound Loop 101 at the I-17 interchange and a closed eastbound Loop 202 on the southeast side remove two of the usual workarounds at the same time, pushing trucks and weekend traffic onto the signed surface-street detours — Deer Valley Road, Union Hills Drive, Pecos Road, Germann Road and McDowell Road — and onto I-10 and I-17 mainlines. Drivers running the corridor this weekend should build in extra time and confirm ramp status on AZ511 before committing to a loop route.
Weather watch on top of the roadworks
Drivers also have weather to factor in: National Weather Service alerts for the Phoenix area included a Flood Watch issued Saturday morning, October 31, running until 5 a.m. Monday, November 2, according to live traffic and weather listings. ADOT weekend schedules are always subject to change, and wet weather is the most common reason a pavement job slips — one more reason to check AZ511 on the day of travel rather than relying on the printed advisory.

What happens next: the reopening ladder
The closures unwind in stages. Loop 303 eastbound was due back first, at 5 p.m. Saturday, October 31. Loop 101 westbound follows at noon on Sunday, November 1. The last three — SR 51 southbound, Loop 202 eastbound and the westbound I-10 frontage road — are all scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, November 2, in time for the Monday commute. Until your segment's slot arrives, the closure and its signed detour remain in force, and ADOT advises all drivers in the Phoenix area this weekend to allow extra travel time.
