The FBI searched a mansion in Beverly Hills, California, on Tuesday in connection with its investigation into former Representative Eric Swalwell, according to two people familiar with the probe cited by CNN. The home is owned by a Swalwell donor, one of the people said.

In a statement to CNN, the FBI said it conducted “an operation in the Los Angeles region related to an ongoing criminal investigation” and declined to comment further. CNN said it had reached out to a lawyer for Swalwell for comment. A second outlet, The States Journal, also reported the Tuesday search, citing a law-enforcement source, and said no arrest was announced alongside it.

Swalwell, a Democrat, resigned from Congress and dropped his bid for California governor in April after reporting by CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle detailed allegations of sexual misconduct, including an allegation by a former staffer who said he had raped her. These are allegations, not findings: Swalwell has denied them, and no criminal charge was announced with Tuesday's search in the reporting reviewed. A court-authorised search, by itself, does not establish that anyone committed a crime.
The house searched on Tuesday belongs to Stephen Cloobeck, a wealthy developer and Swalwell donor, according to CNN's sources. Campaign-finance records cited by CNN show Cloobeck donated $1 million on March 13 to an independent expenditure group supporting Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign, and Swalwell was widely reported to have stayed at the Beverly Hills mansion near the end of that campaign. When the allegations surfaced in April, Cloobeck distanced himself, telling the New York Post: “I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women. I support women's rights.” CNN said it had also sought comment from Cloobeck.
Swalwell is the subject of state and federal investigations. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department opened criminal investigations after CNN's reporting, and in August federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and searched his Washington, DC, home the next day as part of the probe connected to the sexual-assault allegations, according to CNN.
What agents were seeking at the Beverly Hills property, and what — if anything — was taken, has not been made public. The investigation is continuing.
