A 37-year-old motorcyclist died on Thursday morning, October 29, after crashing on the Manuel Campos Parkway on-ramp to westbound Interstate 80 in Fairfield, Solano County, the California Highway Patrol's Solano division said. The crash closed the westbound on-ramp during the early-morning hours while officers investigated.

According to the CHP account reported by KCRA, the rider was attempting to enter westbound I-80 from the Manuel Campos Parkway on-ramp but was going too fast and could not make the curve, resulting in a solo crash. No other vehicle was involved in the collision itself, officers said.

The CHP received the report of the downed rider at 4:22 a.m. and officers arrived at about 4:27 a.m., KCRA reported. Officers found the rider unconscious with shallow breathing, and Fairfield Fire Department crews arrived shortly afterwards and gave medical aid. The rider did not survive. His name has not been released, pending notification of family by the Solano County coroner.

The CHP incident log for the crash fills in the response minute by minute: an OnStar traffic-collision notification at 4:23 a.m. reported the rider down and blocking the ramp; by 4:28 a.m. a reporting party described it as a solo-vehicle collision on westbound I-80 just before the Travis Air Force Base exit; officers ran a traffic break and shut down the Manuel Campos on-ramp at about 4:35 a.m.; Caltrans was notified at 4:38 a.m. and the Solano County coroner at 4:40 a.m.; and a relief unit was still holding the ramp closure at 5:02 a.m.

A busy, freight-heavy stretch of I-80

Fairfield sits on Interstate 80 between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, one of Northern California's heaviest commuter and freight corridors, carrying Bay Area commuters, Travis Air Force Base traffic and a constant flow of trucks. The Manuel Campos Parkway on-ramp feeds westbound traffic toward Vacaville, Davis and Sacramento in one direction and toward Vallejo and the Bay Area in the other, and its curved entry is used at freeway speed from the moment a vehicle leaves the surface street.

The same Fairfield stretch of I-80 has seen serious crashes before this month: about two weeks earlier, two separate crashes on eastbound I-80 at the Air Base Parkway off-ramp near Fairfield left one person dead and sent two CHP officers to hospital with major injuries, KCRA reported at the time. Thursday's crash was at a different ramp and in the opposite direction, but for regular I-80 users it is the latest fatal incident on a short, heavily travelled section of the freeway.

What is known and what is not

Known: a 37-year-old rider crashed alone on the Manuel Campos Parkway on-ramp to westbound I-80 at about 4:22 a.m. on October 29; the CHP says he took the curve too fast; Fairfield Fire crews gave aid at the scene; the coroner was notified at 4:40 a.m. Not yet known: the rider's name, which the coroner will release after family notification, and the CHP's final findings.

FOX40 (KTXL) and ABC10 (KXTV) also reported at least one person dead in the Fairfield I-80 motorcycle crash and the closure of the westbound on-ramp on Thursday morning, matching the CHP and KCRA accounts.

What happens next

The Solano County coroner will release the rider's identity once family has been notified, and the CHP Solano division's investigation into the crash is continuing. Drivers and riders using the I-80 corridor through Solano County — including the many Punjabi truckers who run this route daily between the Bay Area, Sacramento and the Central Valley — faced the on-ramp closure during the early hours, a reminder of how a single pre-dawn crash can close a key freeway entry on this corridor.

Awaaz Punjab is not naming the rider because officials have not released his identity. This report will be updated when the coroner and the CHP release further details.
