Some voters in Fresno will see the wrong school district name printed on their ballot on Election Day — and Fresno County election officials say the mistake is real, limited, and will not change which contest their vote is counted in. The Fresno County Elections Department said it discovered a printing error on a limited number of ballots produced by ballot-marking devices at Vote Centers: the printed ballot labels the Fresno Unified School District trustee contests for Areas 1, 3 and 4 as Fowler Unified contests instead.

The error works in a specific way that matters for voters checking their paper ballot. On the screen of the ballot-marking device, voters who live in Fresno Unified Trustee Areas 1, 3 or 4 see the correct contest title — Fresno Unified School District. It is only when the device prints the completed ballot that the contest title reads Fowler Unified School District Trustee Areas 1, 3 or 4 instead, according to the county's news release, issued on October 31 and reported on November 1 and 2.

What the county clerk says will happen to your vote

Fresno County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James A. Kus confirmed that a ballot with the wrong printed label still records the voter's choice correctly, and that the vote is counted in the correct Fresno Unified trustee contest. County officials said no other contests on the ballot are affected. Kus apologised for any confusion or inconvenience the printing error may cause.

There is a further reason the wrong name cannot quietly move a vote into a different school board race: no seats on the Fowler Unified School Board are up for election in this cycle, because all of its candidates ran unopposed, the Mid Valley Times reported. The label is wrong; officials say the underlying contest the device records is the Fresno Unified race the voter saw on screen.

What is not affected — mail ballots and on-demand ballots

The error does not appear on every kind of ballot. Ballots printed on demand at a Vote Center do not carry the error, and vote-by-mail ballots do not show it either, ABC30 reported. That gives any voter in Trustee Areas 1, 3 or 4 who does not want to use a ballot-marking device a clean alternative: ask at any Vote Center for a ballot printed on demand instead of using the touchscreen device.

The county said it cannot change how the ballot-marking devices print ballots at this stage of the election. Instead, signs describing the error will be posted at ballot-marking devices, so a voter who spots the Fowler Unified name on the printout has an official explanation in front of them before they cast the ballot rather than after.

The audit step the county added because of the error

To give the result an extra check, county officials said additional precincts for each of the trustee areas up for election will be drawn for auditing in the manual tally that follows Election Day. For future elections, the county said it will add another manual proofing of ballots printed by marking devices, on top of the proofing already applied every election to ballots designated for hand marking.

If you are voting in Fresno Unified Areas 1, 3 or 4

Check the printed ballot, not just the screen. If it says Fowler Unified for the trustee contest, officials say your choice is still recorded for Fresno Unified — or ask for an on-demand printed ballot, which does not have the error. Questions: Fresno County Elections, (559) 600-8683.

Why this matters in the Central Valley

Fresno is one of the Central Valley communities where Punjabi and other immigrant families vote, send their children to public schools and follow school board races closely, because trustee decisions shape the schools their families use every day. A wrong district name on a printed ballot, in the middle of a national argument about election administration, is exactly the kind of error that can shake a first-time voter's confidence — which is why the county's explanation, the on-demand alternative and the added audit precincts are the practical facts voters need before polls open on Tuesday, November 3.

What happens next is Election Day itself: Fresno County Vote Centers are open on Tuesday, November 3, and any voter who already cast a ballot on a marking device does not need to vote again — officials say that vote is recorded in the correct contest. The manual tally audit after Election Day, including the additional precincts drawn because of this error, is the step that will test the county's assurance in public.
