U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station in California conducted multiple joint commercial vehicle enforcement operations at the Highway 86 checkpoint throughout August and September, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a release distributed this week. The operations were carried out in partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of Transportation, and agents inspected commercial drivers and vehicles for immigration, transportation and transportation-safety violations.
Agents and partner agencies inspected at least 196 commercial drivers, issued citations to 57 drivers for violations involving English-language proficiency, hours-of-service logbooks and vehicle equipment, and placed 27 drivers out of service, CBP said. Truckers News and The Trucker, reporting independently on the same CBP release, carried the same figures.
Agents also identified two commercial drivers who had violated the conditions of their temporary visitor-visa status by engaging in prohibited shipping activity, CBP said. One driver was processed accordingly, while the second was processed for voluntary return and had his Border Crossing Card revoked.
During the same operations, agents arrested a Haitian national following the revocation of Temporary Protected Status and transferred the person to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations for further processing, the release said. Agents also arrested a U.S. citizen truck driver who had an active, extraditable Texas warrant for a parole violation; he was transferred to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office for extradition.
Highway 86 in California's Imperial Valley is a working freight corridor, and the checks combined three things at once: immigration status, English-language proficiency and hours-of-service/equipment compliance. Drivers crossing checkpoints in the Southwest should keep licence, logbook, vehicle and work-authorisation documents in order — a citation at a checkpoint can put a driver out of service on the spot, before any immigration question is even reached.
What is solid
- The inspection, citation and out-of-service figures (196+, 57 and 27) and the August–September timing at the Highway 86 checkpoint are CBP's own announced results, reported identically by Truckers News and The Trucker.
- The two visa-condition cases, the Haitian national's transfer to ICE and the U.S. citizen driver's Texas warrant arrest are all stated in the CBP release.
What is only claimed
- CBP has not published driver-by-driver details, so which specific violation applied to each of the 27 out-of-service orders cannot be established from the release.
- Whether the two drivers accused of prohibited shipping work accept that characterisation has not been reported — the release states the agencies' finding only.
