LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Exceptionally high tides flooded streets in Newport Beach and set an all-time record at San Pedro on Monday, October 26, raising concerns about additional coastal flooding along the Los Angeles and Orange County coastlines as even higher tides are expected on Tuesday, MyNewsLA reported, citing the National Weather Service.

A preliminary reading at the San Pedro tide gauge reached 8.02 feet on Monday morning, breaking the previous record of 7.93 feet set on January 10, 2005, according to the National Weather Service. Records at the gauge date to November 1923, and forecasters said slightly higher tides are possible on Tuesday. The Guardian likewise reported on Monday that the weather service's Los Angeles office was already seeing record tides, with preliminary San Pedro observations at 8.02 feet, the highest in data dating back to November 1923.

In Orange County, high tide reached 8.3 feet on Monday in Newport Beach, where ocean water flooded streets in low-lying areas, and a tide of 8.5 feet is forecast for Tuesday, according to the Newport Beach Police Department. Water pumps were activated and sand berms were in place to protect vulnerable neighbourhoods, particularly along the Balboa Peninsula, and parking enforcement in Newport Beach was suspended through Wednesday evening so residents could move vehicles away from flood-prone areas, MyNewsLA reported.

Newport Beach police urged residents in low-lying or waterfront areas to take precautions: use sandbags or temporary flood barriers and move vehicles to higher ground if needed. Forecasters said the tides are running about 1 to 1.7 feet above astronomical predictions in Orange County and roughly 1 to 1.5 feet above predictions along the Los Angeles County coastline, MyNewsLA reported.

A coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday for the entire Orange County coastline, and a coastal flood advisory covering the Los Angeles County coastline also remains in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday. FOX Weather reported that coastal flood advisories and warnings were in effect from San Francisco south to San Diego, with record-high tides observed in Los Angeles. The National Weather Service's San Diego office warned that significant coastal flooding in San Diego and Orange counties could close numerous roads and inundate low-lying homes, businesses and some critical infrastructure, according to the Guardian's reporting.

This is an update to the coastal flood warnings first reported earlier in the week: the new development on Monday is that the forecast record was actually broken at San Pedro, streets flooded in Newport Beach, and forecasters now expect the highest water of the cycle on Tuesday before the tides fade on Thursday.
