A corridor with a deadly history for people on foot
It is not the first pedestrian death on this road this year. On May 22, 2026, at about 2:35 a.m., another man was killed on eastbound Florin Road just west of Florin Perkins Road. In that case the driver stopped and called emergency services, and the CHP said alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors. This time, both drivers fled.
Florin Road is one of South Sacramento's main east-west arterials, feeding Highway 99 and carrying heavy commuter and commercial traffic at all hours. Local traffic-safety advocates have long said pedestrian infrastructure in the Florin and Florin Perkins corridor has not kept pace with vehicle volumes, with wide, fast lanes running past shops and homes and few safe places to cross after dark.
What the law says - and what happens next
Under California law, any driver involved in a crash in which someone is injured or killed must stop at the scene. Leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a felony under Vehicle Code section 20001. In hit-and-run investigations, officers rely on vehicle debris and paint evidence, surveillance cameras from businesses along the corridor and witnesses - and a public appeal is often what produces the first lead.
Next, the coroner will complete the identification process, and the CHP search will continue. Investigators typically ask anyone who was on Florin Road around half past midnight, or who may have dashcam video, to come forward.
Sacramento is one of California's largest Punjabi diaspora hubs, and South Sacramento is home to a large Punjabi community. Florin Road is a daily route for early-shift workers and for truckers heading to Highway 99. The death comes at the start of the Halloween weekend, when more children and families will be on foot after dark on Saturday night.
