San Francisco supervisors are expected to consider adding $1.7 million — about 17 lakh dollars — for immigration legal services and the city's Rapid Response Network, Supervisor Jackie Fielder announced on Tuesday, October 20, according to the San Francisco Focal. Fielder announced the proposed ordinance a day after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Milton Ramos Rodriguez in the city's South of Market neighbourhood, the Focal reported.
CBS Bay Area, reported by KION Central Coast, said surveillance video shows a man being detained by masked ICE officers in South of Market on Monday, and that the man can be heard shouting that his rights as a U.S. citizen were being violated. The city's Rapid Response Network, a coalition that responds to immigration enforcement activity, confirmed the detention involved ICE officers, CBS Bay Area reported. The circumstances surrounding the detention remain unclear, according to that reporting. The Focal reported that photos provided by Rodriguez's family show injuries he sustained during the arrest, and that the Rapid Response Network said Rodriguez was receiving legal advice from the San Francisco Public Defender's Office.
Speaking on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday, Fielder said the city must continue to oppose federal immigration enforcement efforts. "We will defend our sanctuary city not just in words but in action," Fielder said, according to CBS Bay Area. Supervisor Bilal Mahmood also raised concerns about the federal government's intentions, saying its intention is to intimidate, according to the same reporting.
The Focal reported that ICE arrests in the Bay Area were up 60% as of August compared with February, according to an analysis of arrest data, and that immigration advocates have also reported a wave of arrests across California. The announcement did not specify when the supervisors would vote on the proposal, the Focal said. Advocates cited by CBS Bay Area warned that without adequate funding, people affected by immigration enforcement could struggle to find legal representation or understand their rights.
