SAN FRANCISCO, California — Subway service on Market Street was interrupted Saturday afternoon by damage from a car that drove onto the tracks and was expected to remain down for the rest of the night, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said, Bay City News reported via Bitcomme.

Muni announced the incident about 3:40 p.m. after an automobile entered a subway tunnel at The Embarcadero, the report said. Subway service was suspended for the night between Van Ness and Embarcadero for trackway inspection and repairs, Muni said.

Eastbound KLM trains were providing service as far as Church Station before switching back to westbound, Muni said, and others were switching back after reaching Castro Station. Shuttle buses were operating in both directions between Market/Castro and Caltrain, and BART was providing service to Muni riders between Embarcadero and Balboa Park in both directions, the city transit agency said.

WiseVoter, in a separate report on the same incident, also said a car drove into the Muni tunnel at the Embarcadero entrance on Saturday afternoon, halted train traffic in both directions through downtown San Francisco, and disrupted three Muni train lines operating through the downtown tunnel.

Neither report gave a reason the car entered the tunnel, said whether anyone was injured, or said whether the driver was detained. The transit agency's stated plan in the Bay City News report was inspection and repairs overnight, with the Van Ness-to-Embarcadero section closed for the night.
