Westbound Interstate 80 in San Francisco is closed for the whole weekend, from 11 p.m. on Friday, October 23, until 6 a.m. on Monday, October 26, Caltrans said. The closure covers the Bayshore Freeway between 5th Street and 15th Street, on the route drivers use after crossing the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge into the city.

Caltrans advised motorists to avoid travelling to San Francisco via the Bay Bridge this weekend and to use public transportation or alternate bridges instead — the San Mateo, Dumbarton or Richmond–San Rafael bridges. Drivers who do reach the closure must use the Fifth Street exit, the last exit before the closed section, and follow detours back onto westbound I-80 or onto I-280.

Crews are placing polyester concrete on the westbound Bayshore Freeway deck. Caltrans said the work completes a broader I-80 Bayshore Freeway viaduct polyester-concrete project that began on the eastbound freeway earlier this year.

The Central and Bayshore freeway viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the Bay Bridge corridor, according to Caltrans, which said the rehabilitation is needed to prevent further deterioration and preserve safety for motorists, commuters, pedestrians and cyclists.

San Francisco International Airport also issued a traffic alert for the closure, warning guests travelling to SFO to allow extra travel time and consider alternate transport such as BART, with traffic diverted off the Fremont Street exit as well as the Fifth Street exit.

For truckers and other drivers crossing from Oakland this weekend, the practical advice from both agencies is the same: plan the detour before setting out, expect delays around the Bay Bridge approach, and do not rely on the westbound I-80 through central San Francisco until lanes reopen early Monday.
