The vehicle, a gray four-door sedan, was making a westbound turn from a gas station on West Manchester Avenue, east of South Broadway, at about 3:45 p.m. on Saturday when it struck the man, according to police. The car continued westbound on Manchester Avenue until bystanders flagged the driver down and told him he had struck a pedestrian, police said.
"The driver returned to the scene of the collision and stayed at the scene until the Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived. The driver left the scene prior to the arrival of officers and failed to provide his information, as required by law," the police statement said, as quoted by MyNewsLA.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said. His identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.
A reward of up to $50,000 may be available under the city's Hit-and-Run Reward Program for information leading to the driver's identification, apprehension and conviction, or resolution through a civil compromise, according to police. Anyone with information was urged to call the LAPD's South Traffic Division at 323-421-2500, or, during weekends or off-hours, at 877-527-3247. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
