A 71-year-old man from Vallejo died early Thursday, October 22, after being struck while crossing westbound Interstate 80 near the Interstate 780 interchange in Vallejo, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Officers were called at about 2:35 a.m. and the man was pronounced dead at the scene; CHP has not released his name.

The driver of the Tesla involved, a 26-year-old man from San Francisco, remained at the scene, cooperated with officers and shared dashcam video, CHP said. He told officers the vehicle was operating in Tesla's Full Self-Driving mode — a driver claim that CHP has not independently confirmed as the mode's status.

A preliminary CHP review of the video showed the Tesla travelling at about 70 mph when the man entered the freeway from the right shoulder and crossed toward the center divider. The video showed the car braking and steering left, but its right front still struck him, CHP said.

CHP said the man was then struck by at least one additional vehicle while in the traffic lanes, and no other driver stopped. The Solano Area CHP office is investigating and has asked anyone who witnessed the crash or knows about the other vehicle to call 707-639-5600.

CHP has repeatedly warned that, despite its name, Full Self-Driving is a driver-assistance system that requires the driver's constant attention and does not make a vehicle fully autonomous.
