WOODLAND, California — A pedestrian was struck on Tuesday morning in Woodland, in Yolo County near Sacramento, by a vehicle operated by federal immigration authorities, the Woodland Police Department said. Police said the incident happened at 9:38 a.m. near Locust Street and Clover Street, that officers responded and contacted the involved parties, and that the department is actively investigating the circumstances, according to FOX40 and ChicoSol reporting on the police statement.
A video posted by the rapid-response network NorCal Resist shows a person being knocked over by a dark-coloured SUV, and ChicoSol reported the video shows the vehicle continuing on without stopping. NorCal Resist said the pedestrian suffered only minor injuries, a detail also reported by ABC10 Sacramento, which said it was awaiting comment from ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.
Rep. Mike Thompson, who represents California's 4th District including part of Yolo County, issued an official statement on Tuesday. 'ICE cannot continue to terrorize our communities. I am in communication with local law enforcement, who have informed me that ICE was operating the vehicle in question and that an investigation is underway,' Thompson said. 'No one is above the law. ICE's actions have contributed to growing distrust and fear within our communities, making transparency and accountability all the more critical.'
ChicoSol reported that a NorCal Resist volunteer said neighbours blew whistles to alert the community after ICE sightings were confirmed on various streets in Woodland on Tuesday morning, and that ChicoSol had emailed ICE for comment and had not received a response at the time of reporting. Awaaz Punjab is presenting the no-stop detail as what the NorCal Resist video shows, not as a police finding — the Woodland police investigation is ongoing.
Woodland sits in California's Central Valley corridor north-west of Sacramento, an area with a large Punjabi and immigrant community for whom immigration-enforcement operations are a closely watched issue. No name for the pedestrian has been released by police in the reports cited here.
