Troopers responded at about 7:05 a.m. to southbound Highway 85 at milepost 262, north of Crystal River Road, near La Salle. Preliminary reports indicate a white box truck travelling northbound lost control, crossed the centre median, struck a Toyota Matrix head-on, and then struck a Honda Accord, the patrol said.
The driver of the Toyota Matrix, a 29-year-old man from Thornton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Weld County Coroner will release his identity once next of kin has been notified, the patrol said. The box truck driver, a 25-year-old man from Thornton, sustained serious bodily injury, and the Honda Accord driver, a 36-year-old man from Greeley, sustained moderate injuries.
Preliminary details indicate the box truck driver and the Toyota driver were not wearing seatbelts, while the Honda driver was wearing one, the patrol said. Highway 85 reopened at about 12:18 p.m., after a closure of about 5 hours and 15 minutes.
