Troopers responded at about 7:05 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, to the multi-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 85 at milepost 262, north of Crystal River Road near La Salle, according to the patrol.
Preliminary reports indicate a white box truck travelling northbound lost control, crossed the centre median and struck a Toyota Matrix head-on, then hit a Honda Accord, the patrol said.
The Toyota driver, a 29-year-old man from Thornton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Weld County Coroner will release his name once next of kin have been notified. The box-truck driver, a 25-year-old man from Thornton, suffered serious injuries, and the Honda driver, a 36-year-old man from Greeley, suffered moderate injuries.
The patrol said preliminary details indicate the box-truck and Toyota drivers were not wearing seat belts, while the Honda driver was. Highway 85 reopened at about 12:18 p.m., after a closure of roughly five hours and 15 minutes.
The crash investigation is ongoing and no cause has been determined, the Colorado State Patrol said.
