Troopers from Troop I in Bethany responded at approximately 4:17 p.m. on October 31, 2026, to the two-vehicle fatal crash on Route 15 southbound near Exit 42B in Orange, in New Haven County. The release was issued on Sunday as the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad joined the investigation.

Side by side — then one car moved over
The preliminary investigation indicates that Vehicle 1 was travelling in the right lane while Vehicle 2 was travelling alongside it in the left lane. For reasons that are still under investigation, Vehicle 2 entered the right lane and struck Vehicle 1, state police said. The New England Signal, reporting the same release on November 1, put it plainly: the two cars were travelling side by side when the car in the left lane moved into the right lane and hit the other car, and why it changed lanes is still not known.

Both vehicles then left the roadway, crossed the right shoulder and collided with a metal-beam guardrail. The vehicles travelled through the guardrail, and Vehicle 2 subsequently struck a highway sign support post before both vehicles came to rest on an embankment along the right shoulder, according to the release.

One driver dead at the scene; the other taken to Yale New Haven
The operator of Vehicle 2 — the car that changed lanes — was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of Vehicle 1 was transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital with injuries. State police did not release either driver's name and did not describe the extent of the surviving driver's injuries. Next of kin for the deceased driver have been notified, the release said.

Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Megill's Towing. No charges, citations or contributing factors have been announced, and police have not said whether speed, impairment or a medical emergency played any part — those are among the questions the reconstruction is meant to answer.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or who was travelling in the area at the time and may have dash-camera footage, is asked to contact Trooper Patrick Miko (#1353) at (203) 393-4200 or patrick.miko@ct.gov. On a parkway where the two cars were side by side with no third vehicle involved, another driver's camera may be the clearest record of why Vehicle 2 moved over.
Route 15: the parkway commuters and truck-route drivers share
Route 15 is the parkway corridor that runs from New York City through Fairfield and New Haven counties toward Hartford — the Merritt Parkway to the south and the Wilbur Cross Parkway through the New Haven area. Through Orange it is a divided, two-lanes-each-way parkway lined with guardrails and wooded embankments, carrying heavy commuter traffic between New Haven, Bridgeport and the New York suburbs. Commercial trucks are restricted on the parkway itself, but it is the daily route for thousands of car commuters — including many South Asian families who live in the New Haven and Fairfield County suburbs and work across the corridor.
The crash happened in daylight, at 4:17 p.m. on a Saturday — Halloween afternoon, with the parkway carrying weekend and holiday traffic. That timing is part of why investigators want footage: at that hour, several drivers are likely to have seen the two cars in the seconds before they left the road.
What happens next
The Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad (C.A.R.S.) is assisting Troop I with the ongoing investigation, measuring the scene and reconstructing how the vehicles moved. State police have not announced when the drivers' names will be released. Awaaz Punjab will update this story when authorities release the names, describe the surviving driver's condition, or announce any finding on why the car changed lanes.
