What led to the shot is, at this stage, the sheriff's preliminary account, not a court finding. The release said Butler and another man had a verbal exchange about a previous disagreement, that the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation when, in the release's words, Butler attacked the male, and that a single shot was fired during the altercation by the male who was attacked. After the shooting, Butler went into the business and collapsed, the release said.
