Two people were shot dead shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, in the 1100 block of West University Avenue in Gainesville, Florida — the bar-and-late-night strip across from the University of Florida's Midtown area — and Gainesville Police Department officers who were already patrolling nearby heard the gunshots, chased the alleged gunman on foot and arrested him within minutes, according to the arrest report detailed by the Alachua Chronicle. Trevez Ravell McRae, 29, has been charged with two counts of first-degree homicide, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting an officer without violence. McRae was on probation at the time, the Chronicle reported. The charges are accusations; he has not been convicted of them.

Officers were already on patrol when the shots rang out

At about 3:59 a.m., Gainesville officers patrolling the area of 1100 West University Avenue heard gunshots and saw McRae running northwest through the parking lot of the Chevron station at 1024 West University Avenue immediately afterwards, the arrest report states. Officers ordered him to stop; he allegedly turned and ran east on West University Avenue and then south on SW 10th Street. As he reached the southwest corner of West University Avenue and SW 10th Street, an officer saw him drop a handgun — after which McRae reportedly surrendered and was detained. The report states McRae is clearly identifiable as the man who ran from officers: he was wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey, and his arm tattoos are visible in surveillance video.

Other officers found the first victim on the ground at the southwest corner of West University Avenue and NW 10th Street, unresponsive with at least one gunshot wound; officers rendered aid until an ambulance took the victim to hospital, where the victim was pronounced deceased. A second victim was found unresponsive outside 1010 West University Avenue, also with at least one gunshot wound, and was likewise pronounced deceased at hospital after officers rendered aid and an ambulance transported the victim. Gainesville police are investigating the shooting, which took place around 4 a.m. near 1100 W. University Ave., Main Street Daily News reported separately on Sunday afternoon, confirming the two deaths.

What the surveillance video reportedly shows

Surveillance video reportedly shows a large group of people arguing on the sidewalk in front of 1010 West University Avenue; the argument escalates into pushing and hitting, the arrest report states. McRae is reportedly seen in the group, and when the fighting begins, the first victim is seen punching McRae in the head. As McRae backs away, he can be seen pulling a handgun from his waist area and firing two shots at the first victim, striking the first victim at least once; the first victim runs west along West University Avenue until he falls. McRae is then seen running west and firing again, approaching the second victim, who was walking away; another camera angle reportedly shows McRae running up behind the second victim and shooting the second victim at least once. The report says the surveillance video does not show anyone else firing a firearm during the incident.

After being read his Miranda rights, McRae reportedly told officers he had been with friends at Kava Lounge (1007 West University Avenue) and, after it closed, was with them on the north side of the West University Avenue and NW 10th Street intersection. He said a friend had argued with another group earlier in the evening and, believing it would escalate, he had asked another friend to lend him a gun — handed to him, he said, 'minutes' before the shooting. McRae reportedly said he was trying to break up the fight when he was punched in the face, 'panicked,' and fired at the first victim because he was ready to 'defend myself by any means necessary.' He said he shot the second victim because that victim had been fighting with his friend, and he denied intentionally discarding the gun, saying it must have fallen from his pocket as he ran. These are McRae's own reported statements to police, as summarised in the arrest report; they are his account, not findings of fact.

Charges, record and probation

McRae has a juvenile history from 2012 to 2014, two adult felony convictions (non-violent) and two misdemeanour convictions (violent), the Chronicle reported from the arrest record, and he served one state prison sentence for unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm before his release in 2019. In 2024 he was arrested after two handguns — one fitted with a Glock switch — were found in the glove compartment of a car he was driving; he denied owning the guns, the gun charges were later dropped, and after pleading nolo contendere to fleeing law enforcement he was sentenced in August 2024 to 10 months in jail followed by two years of probation — the probation he was still serving on Sunday morning. A judge will decide on Monday whether to set bail in the new homicide case.

Charges are accusations, and the victims have not been named in these reports

The Alachua Chronicle notes its arrest coverage is based on law-enforcement reports and court records, and that the charges are only accusations — all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Gainesville Police Department had not released the two victims' names in the reports available on Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to contact GPD at 352-393-7700, or Alachua County Crime Stoppers anonymously at 352-372-STOP (7867), via the P3 Tips app or at stopcrime.tv. A violent 24 hours across Gainesville

The University Avenue killings were not the city's only gunfire this weekend. A male victim was shot on Saturday night at Majestic Oaks (5800 SW 20th Avenue). At about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, officers responded to shots fired near Gardenia Gardens (1723 NE 8th Avenue), where shell casings were found and several vehicles and buildings had been hit, but no injuries were reported and no casings were found inside apartments. At about 11:45 a.m., officers responded to a drive-by shooting in the 800 block of NE 24th Street, where witnesses said a vehicle with at least two occupants fired several shots at a residence and the people inside came out and returned fire; casings were recovered and no injuries were reported. Police have not announced that any of these incidents are connected to the University Avenue homicides.

What happens next

What happens next starts in court: a judge decides on Monday whether McRae is held on bail, and prosecutors will decide how the first-degree homicide charges proceed in Alachua County court. Detectives are still working the University Avenue scene and the day's other shooting reports, and GPD says it will release more information as it becomes available. For Gainesville readers — including the students and late-night workers along the West University Avenue strip, which sits directly across from the University of Florida campus — the immediate questions are the victims' identities, whether the weekend's separate shootings share any thread, and what patrols will look like on Midtown's busiest block next weekend.
