The historic ocean liner SS United States is expected to be sunk off Florida's Gulf Coast in November to create what officials hope will become the world's largest artificial reef, the Associated Press reported.

Okaloosa County officials said the vessel is expected to be submerged during the second week of November, although the schedule could change depending on weather conditions. The ship will be sunk about 22 nautical miles (41 kilometres) southwest of Destin.

"This is an exciting move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for our tourism industry," county officials said in a news release.

Measuring nearly 1,000 feet (305 metres) in length, the SS United States made history on its maiden voyage in 1952 by breaking the transatlantic speed record. Preservation groups made efforts to save the historic vessel but faced difficulties due to the high costs involved, AP said.

Supporters hope the ship will become a major attraction for marine life and divers, joining more than 500 artificial reefs in the region. The project is also expected to boost tourism and generate millions of dollars annually for local businesses, including scuba diving shops, fishing charter operators and hotels.
