Tallahassee police announced on Monday that a 15-year-old boy was arrested on Sunday in connection with the shooting near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium that injured 12 people during the university's homecoming weekend. The teenager faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent, police said in a statement. He is not being named in this report because of his age.

The teenager appeared in court on Monday for a brief hearing, where a judge ordered that he remain in custody. State Attorney Jack Campbell said prosecutors will move his case to adult court, and that a surveillance camera captured some of the shooting, though investigators are still searching for more video and want to speak with witnesses.

What happened on Saturday night

The gunfire erupted shortly before 8 p.m. on Saturday near Perry and Manatee streets, just outside Bragg Memorial Stadium, after Florida A&M lost its homecoming football game 31-28 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Police said a fight broke out first, stemming from a dispute between a few people who knew one another, and shots were then fired into a crowded area. Investigators believe none of the people who were hit were the intended targets.

Eleven people were struck by gunfire, and a twelfth person — a grandmother of one of the victims — was injured while running from the scene. Six of those hurt were minors, and the youngest victim is 11 years old. At least three victims suffered serious injuries; as of Sunday, five people had been treated and released from hospital and six remained hospitalised, including one in critical condition, police said.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the area was so crowded that ambulances could not get through, and officers carried the wounded through the crowds to reach emergency vehicles. "What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families," Revell said. "While this arrest marks a significant step forward, our work is far from over."

Police said the investigation is continuing and that further arrests and charges are possible. The charges are allegations, and the teenager is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
