TALLAHASSEE, Florida — A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with the shooting near Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium over the weekend that injured 12 people, Tallahassee police said on Monday. Detectives arrested the teenager on Sunday, and he faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent, according to police. The teenager is a minor and is not named in this report; the charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
'What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families,' Police Chief Lawrence Revell said. 'While this arrest marks a significant step forward, our work is far from over. We remain committed to holding those responsible accountable and getting answers for every family impacted by this tragedy,' he added.
The shooting broke out at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, near Perry and Manatee streets, close to the stadium, hours after the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat the Florida A&M Rattlers 31-28 in the homecoming football game. Eleven people were wounded by gunfire and a twelfth person, a victim's grandmother, was injured while fleeing, police said. Six juveniles, including an 11-year-old, were among the injured, and no deaths have been reported. As of Sunday morning, five people had been released from hospital and six remained hospitalized, one of them in critical condition, Tallahassee police said.
Police said on Monday that the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible. Preliminary findings indicate a physical altercation took place among individuals known to one another before shots were fired, Revell said. 'At this stage of the investigation, none of the victims appear to have been the intended targets,' the police chief said.
After the shooting, Florida A&M issued a statement on X asking its campus community to stay away from the area, describing the shooting as having taken place 'near campus,' which it said remained safe. 'Our hearts are with the victims and everyone affected by tonight's incident on Perry Street,' the university added.
