Albany, Georgia — Officers with the Albany Police Department responded at around 7:51 p.m. on Friday, October 23, to an aggravated assault report in the 100 block of Broadway Street. The woman told officers that she and her son were inside a vehicle when he allegedly started assaulting her and removed a handgun from her purse. She fled to a nearby business. A short time later, a gunshot was heard, and the son was last seen fleeing on foot toward Union Baptist Church, police said. Police said the incident was not an active shooter situation at Albany State University, and an active search for the suspect was underway. In a separate account citing Albany Police Chief Michael Persley, officers responded shortly before 8 p.m. to the domestic situation near the university, and the woman fled the vehicle and ran into a nearby business to seek safety before the gunshot was heard.

Albany State University issued an emergency alert through its LiveSafe app for the East Campus, near the residence halls. Students and staff in the immediate area were directed to lock and barricade doors, silence mobile devices and remain out of sight while officers searched. The alert initially described the individual as a white man wearing a purple shirt and warned that he was believed to be armed — that description is from the university's alert, as reported.

The university later issued an all-clear and lifted the shelter-in-place order. Officials clarified that the incident was related to a domestic issue that occurred near the university grounds, normal operations resumed once authorities determined the campus was secure, and no injuries were reported during the event.
