A 60-year-old student died and another student was wounded in a shooting at Atlanta Technical College in southwest Atlanta on Monday morning, October 19, Atlanta police said, in an incident investigators describe as beginning with an accidental discharge in a classroom.
Officers responded at about 8:45 a.m. to a report of a person shot at the campus at 1560 Metropolitan Parkway SW. They found the 60-year-old student dead in a campus bathroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Atlanta Police Department's preliminary account reported by the Atlanta Focal and PEOPLE. On Tuesday, the Focal reported the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office had identified the deceased student as Donald Silva, 60. Police said their preliminary investigation indicates Silva's firearm discharged accidentally in a classroom, striking a second student in the leg. Silva then left the classroom and entered the bathroom, where he sustained the fatal wound. The injured student was taken to hospital by ambulance, alert, conscious and breathing, and the college said the wounds were not life-threatening.
The college secured the campus following the incident, and classes and other operations later resumed, a college spokesperson told WXIA-TV. "Our thoughts are with the students, their families and the entire Atlanta Technical College community during this time," the spokesperson said. The spokesperson also noted, according to PEOPLE's reporting of the WXIA account, that Georgia law allows students to carry guns on campus and in classrooms. Police said the investigation remains ongoing and they had nothing further to release at this stage.
Authorities described the shooting as an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the campus community. No charges or further official findings have been announced, and police have not released the injured student's identity.
