According to the GBI, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources game warden was following up on a report of illegal hunting in a rural area in Appling County on October 23 at about 7:30 p.m. when a man, later identified as Nencioni, allegedly shot at the warden. Nencioni then ran away, and Appling County Sheriff's Office deputies detained him nearby, the bureau said.

Neither the game warden nor Nencioni was injured in the incident, the GBI said. Nencioni was booked into the Appling County Jail. The Department of Natural Resources and the Appling County Sheriff's Office had requested the GBI to investigate the shooting.

The investigation is active and ongoing, the GBI said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the GBI regional investigative office in Douglas at 912-389-4103, or submit an anonymous tip at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477). Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution, the bureau said. The charges are allegations, and Nencioni is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
