CANTON, Georgia — Three people have been arrested in connection with an alleged conspiracy to carry out a shooting at Cherokee High School in Canton, Cherokee County, after the FBI's Atlanta office identified threatening social-media posts and alerted school district police, the Canton Police Department said in accounts reported October 27 by WSB-TV, AtlantaFi and the Metter Advertiser. No attack took place, no one was injured, and authorities say they have identified no known ongoing threat to Cherokee High School or other Cherokee County schools. Every charge described below is an allegation; none of the three has been convicted.

The investigation began on October 19, 2026, when Cherokee County School District police contacted Canton detectives after receiving the FBI tip about the threatening posts. The joint investigation was led by the Canton Police Department with assistance from the FBI. Detectives identified a juvenile from Canton linked to the threats and arrested the youth on October 20. The juvenile faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and disruption or interference with the operation of public schools. Authorities are withholding the juvenile's name because of age, and this report withholds it for the same reason.
Arrests across three states in four days
As the investigation expanded, a Cherokee County magistrate issued arrest warrants on October 22 for two additional suspects. On October 23, Canton detectives, working with the FBI, the Candler County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), arrested a 17-year-old from Metter, in Candler County, Georgia. He is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, police said. Because he is 17, this report gives his age and home town only, even though police-facing reporting in Georgia named him.
The same day, October 23, the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Michael Brandon Terry, 21, of Chatsworth, California. Terry is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder. He remains in California awaiting extradition — described in local reporting as transport to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center in Georgia. No court date for Terry in Georgia had been announced in the October 27 reporting, and no attorney who could comment for any of the three was named in that reporting.
During the investigation and related searches, law enforcement collected firearms, ammunition and electronic devices as evidence, police said. Officials have not released further details about the alleged plot, the suspects' relationships to each other, or each person's specific alleged role, saying that releasing more would compromise the ongoing investigation. That means the public record so far establishes the tip, the timeline, the charges and the seizures — it does not yet establish a motive, a planned date, or how the three allegedly connected, and this report does not speculate on any of those points.
Authorities have identified no known ongoing threat to Cherokee High School or other Cherokee County schools. The district briefed faculty and staff, increased police presence on the Cherokee High School campus and arranged additional counsellors for students and staff.
How the school and district responded
Cherokee County School District officials briefed faculty and staff at the high school and at a neighbouring middle school, increased police presence on the Cherokee High School campus, and arranged additional counsellors for students and staff, according to the police accounts. The district notified families and employees of the developments. Superintendent Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis praised the multi-agency response in a message to families, noting that the investigation demonstrated effective safety protocols and collaboration among the FBI, Canton Police, school police, the district attorney's office and other agencies.
"The safety of our students and school staff is a top priority, and we take every threat seriously," Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell said. "I appreciate the quick action of our law enforcement partners and the dedication of our detectives in identifying and arresting the suspects." Officials encourage parents to discuss with their children the importance of immediately reporting threats — the route by which, in this case, a social-media post reached the FBI and then local detectives before any violence occurred.
Background: why a social-media tip moves this fast
Cherokee High School is the district's school in Canton, the Cherokee County seat in metro Atlanta's northern suburbs — a fast-growing area where many families, including Punjabi and other immigrant families who have settled across north Georgia, send their children to the county's public schools. In cases like this one, the sequence matters for parents everywhere: a threat posted online was flagged by a federal office, passed to school-district police, and turned into arrests within four days, with searches that recovered firearms and ammunition, according to police. Police have presented the case as a disruption — a plot stopped at the allegation stage — not as a near-miss shooting, and families should hold that distinction: no shots were fired, no weapon was reported brought to the campus, and the campus response since the arrests has been precautionary.
What happens next
The investigation remains active, police said. Terry's extradition from California to Georgia must be completed before he can appear in a Cherokee County court; the Metter teenager is held at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center on the conspiracy charge; and the Canton juvenile's case proceeds under juvenile protections, with the name withheld. Detectives have not announced further warrants, and any additional charges would come from the ongoing investigation and the district attorney's office. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Canton Police Department at 770-720-4883 or submit a tip to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov, police said. This report will be updated by the desk if police release the alleged plot details, court dates or a statement from any defence attorney.
