The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Dublin, Laurens County, after a sheriff's deputy fired at a man who, investigators say, pointed an object at the deputy during a foot chase on Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured.

Preliminary information from the GBI says that on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at about 2:09 p.m., a Laurens County Sheriff's deputy approached Charles Daniel McMahan, 36, of Dublin, who was riding a bicycle on Fire Tower Road, to speak with him about an ongoing burglary investigation. McMahan ran away, the deputy pursued him on foot, and during the pursuit McMahan allegedly pointed an object at the deputy, who then shot at McMahan but did not hit him, the GBI said.

Neither McMahan nor the deputy was injured. McMahan was later arrested by the Laurens County Sheriff's Office on charges unrelated to the officer-involved shooting, according to the GBI and The Courier Herald's reporting of the same release.

The GBI said it is conducting an independent investigation at the sheriff's office's request. Once complete, the case file will be provided to the Dublin Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
