The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville says minor flooding is continuing on the Satilla River at Atkinson in Brantley County, Georgia, and its flood warning remains in effect until further notice.
At 9:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, October 19, the river stood at 14.2 feet — 1.2 feet above its 13.0-foot flood stage — and forecasters expect it to remain steady at about 14.2 feet rather than recede. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gauge at Atkinson (site 02228000) was still reading 14.18 feet on Tuesday, October 20, with a flow of 7,640 cubic feet per second, holding in minor flood stage.
According to the NWS warning, at 13.0 feet flooding begins at Warners Landing and Louis Landing and on secondary roads around the KOA campgrounds, and at 14.0 feet water begins to flood across River Rock Road. The next NWS statement is due Tuesday evening at 10 p.m. EDT.
Officials remind drivers never to drive through flooded roads, because standing and moving water can be deeper and stronger than it looks.
