BLOOMINGTON, Illinois — Eight people were shot in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, in the 100 block of East Division Street in Bloomington, McLean County, near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus, the Bloomington Police Department said. A 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the McLean County Coroner's Office. One woman was taken to a regional trauma centre in critical condition, and six other victims suffered injuries police described as non-life-threatening.

Officers responded at 1:23 a.m. to a report of shots fired and found several people with gunshot wounds, police said. Officers secured the area and rendered life-saving measures and medical aid before the victims were taken to area hospitals. The McLean County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police assisted Bloomington police at the scene.

The Illinois State University Police Department separately reported that one of its students was injured in the shooting. The student was treated at an area hospital and later released, according to the police account — a detail that underlines how close the gunfire came to two campuses at once: the shooting block sits near Illinois Wesleyan University, while Illinois State University is based in neighbouring Normal, the other half of the Bloomington-Normal twin cities.

A wide search area, and a night of ambulances

Police named an area of interest running from Center Street to Franklin Avenue and from Emerson Street to Apple Street, and asked anyone with information or security footage from that grid to come forward. Live emergency dispatch traffic from the same minutes independently recorded ambulances carrying gunshot patients toward BroMenn and St Joseph hospitals, extra ambulances being requested from Normal, and crews staging near a Casey's store east of the scene — the sound of a small city suddenly running a mass-casualty response.

What police have not announced is as important as what they have: by Sunday afternoon there was no word of any arrest, no suspect description, no stated motive, and no names released for any of the eight victims. Awaaz Punjab is not naming the woman who died because police and the coroner have not released her identity.

Not the other Bloomington shooting — there were two, in two states

The same early hours brought a second shooting in a different Bloomington: on East Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington, Indiana, near Indiana University, seven people were hurt and no deaths were reported, in an incident Awaaz Punjab has already covered. The Indiana and Illinois shootings are separate events in separate states that happen to share a city name, and the two have been repeatedly confused in online posts overnight. This report is only about Bloomington, Illinois.

Bloomington-Normal is a twin-city community in central Illinois built around its two universities, Illinois Wesleyan and Illinois State, whose students live across both cities. The shooting came on Halloween weekend, when streets near both campuses are at their busiest — the context in which a single shots-fired call at 1:23 a.m. turned into eight gunshot victims.

Police appeal

Bloomington police ask anyone with information or security footage from the area of interest — Center Street to Franklin Avenue, Emerson Street to Apple Street — to call 309-434-2532.

What happens next

The investigation remains active, police said, with detectives working to establish what led to the gunfire and who fired. The coroner's office will handle the formal identification of the woman who died. Expect further updates from Bloomington police on arrests and on the condition of the woman in critical care; this story will be updated as those are confirmed.
